Dateline 2009

Will We Be Ready?

Not unless we develop a plan with world-class dimensions.

Dateline 2009 is a body of strategic goals, jointly developed by our State Board, college presidents, and the Chancellor, intended to increase the scope of our system – so that we can meet the critical needs of the Commonwealth and reach even more Virginians by the end of the decade.

Dateline 2009 raises the bar high, so that we can move from good to great. Here, in summary, are seven major goals from Dateline 2009, which drive the particulars in the entire document.

The Virginia Community College System, in a pledge to become world-class, will respond to Virginia’s most pressing needs by 2009, in the areas of capacity and workforce readiness, with specific, measurable goals.

  • The VCCS must serve at least 16,000 new students by 2009.
  • The VCCS will provide training for 225,000 individuals who choose non-credit training annually, an increase of nearly 80% -- from 125,000 to 225,000.
  • To expand its capacity and provide greater economic opportunity, by 2009, the VCCS will rank in the top ten percent in the nation with regard to
    • Graduation rates
    • Retention rates
    • Job placement rates
  • The VCCS will triple the number of graduates who successfully transfer to four-year institutions.
  • VCCS tuition will not exceed half of the average cost to attend a public four-year institution in the Commonwealth.
  • The VCCS will triple the number of high school students who take college courses and receive college credits, raising the number from 14,000 to 45,000.
  • The VCCS will become more proactive in securing private support to insure its capacity to respond to the needs of the Commonwealth. Collectively, the VCCS foundations will double their holdings, moving from $75 million to $150 million.
