I. Teaching & Learning
To provide a world-class teaching and learning environment and ensure that
teaching and learning remain the focus of the VCCS, the following will be necessary:
Students
- Student Success. Virginia Community College students, compared to other community college students, will move from average rankings to be in the top 10% with respect to
- Graduation rates
- Retention rates
- Job placement rates
- Student Competencies. Students will achieve a success rate of eighty percent (80%) or higher in all areas of core competencies (e.g. information technology, written and oral communication, critical thinking, scientific and quantitative reasoning).
- Accelerated Learning. The VCCS will triple the number of graduates who get their high school diploma with dual enrollment credit for college classes at graduation.
- Student Goals. Annually, ninety-five percent (95%) of graduating students will report that they have raised their personal and professional goals as a result of their community college experience.
- Student Satisfaction. Overall student satisfaction with the community college experience, regardless of the instructional delivery mode or location, will exceed 95%.
- Work-Bound Student Outcomes. Ninety percent (90%) of graduates who desire employment will be working in their field within 180 days of graduation, up from approximately seventy-five percent (75%) now.
Faculty and Staff
- Master Teacher Seminar. All new full-time faculty members will participate in a VCCS Master Teacher Seminar during the first four years of employment.
- Faculty Administrative Evaluation. Full-time teaching, professional and administrative faculty will be evaluated using a standard evaluation system approved by the Chancellor.
- Classified Staff Leadership. A VCCS Leadership Development Program will be implemented for classified staff, with participation by staff from all colleges.
- Distance Learning. All faculty members will have access to in-house training to learn how to build distance learning courses.
- Workforce Development. System-wide, 80% of community college Workforce Development administrators will attain the Certified Professional Workforce Education and Training Credential.
Curriculum and Student Services
- E-tutorials. Students will have access to twenty-four hour e-tutorial services in all general education courses.
- Common Core. Each discipline will adopt common core content/competencies.
- International Experiences. All colleges will provide international experiences for students through one or more of the following options: courses, presentations, visiting international professors, and study abroad experiences.
