Sunny Andrews First to Receive Legacy Scholarship

Rustburg Student to Attend CVCC in the Fall, 2006

Lynchburg, Va. /Media Release/ -- Rustburg High School Student, Sunny Andrews, has been selected to receive the inaugural VCCS Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship.  She is among 40 first-time college students named to the Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship Program.  The Lynchburg resident will enter Central Virginia Community College in the fall, 2006.

Andrews graduated from Rustburg High School this month and is the school’s highest ranked student with a GPA of 4.175.  She is a recipient of Academic Excellence Awards for each of her four years in high school and is a member of the Rustburg Forensics Club, FBLA, Varsity Soccer, Science Club, and Latin Club.  Andrews placed 2nd in the district and 4th in the region for forensics and 3rd in the district as a future business leader.

Andrews chose to attend CVCC due to the school’s philosophy on education.  “I believe the professors encourage students to do their best and excel in the pursuit of their personal and academic goals,” she says.  She is looking to further her interest in communication design with long term plans to attend the Art Institute of Washington.

As a Commonwealth Legacy Scholar, Andrews will attend several statewide events designed to promote the Program and general education.  She will receive leadership training and become mentor to future Legacy Scholars.

The Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship Program is presented by The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education and is a product of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).  Each of the 23 community colleges, a total of 40 campuses within the VCCS, has selected a recipient(s) for the award.  It is a merit-based scholarship given to those who have demonstrated academic excellence during high school and are committed to developing leadership skills.

CVCC’s Legacy Scholarship was named for James P. McCormick, former president of the CVCC Educational Foundation from 1996 to 2001.  McCormick devoted many years to fundraising, not just for the College, but also Lynchburg’s American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and several other charitable causes.  He is a retired vice president and regional manager of Nationwide Insurance and resides in Lynchburg.
