New Horizons Formed to Retrain Unemployed
Program Designed to Offer Hope to Brookneal Community
Lynchburg, Va. /Media Release/ -- CVCCs Department of Workforce Development and Lynchburg-based Career One Stop have joined forces to create New Horizons, a program designed to assist displaced workers. The new endeavor was developed in response to the recent factory closings in Brookneal which have escalated the rolls of the unemployed in that area. Brookneal residents are being invited to attend one of two workshops being held August 1 by New Horizons to learn about new career and education opportunities.
New Horizons has scheduled two introductory sessions at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at the CVCC Brookneal Center on 204 Webb Street located in the lower level of the Patrick Henry Memorial Library. Program representatives will provide information on services and benefits that are available to those who have recently been laid off due to factory closings. Topics will include career assessments, career training, and education opportunities through the Federal Trade Act established by the U.S. Department of Labor originally intended for displaced workers affected by NAFTA.
According to Stan Shoun, CVCC Vice President for Workforce Development and Continuing Education, Brookneal workers must adjust to the changing industrial market and master skills that are in demand today. Jobs in industries such as furniture, textile, and agriculture are virtually nonexistent in the area, Shoun reports. He adds, Under the programs being offered by New Horizons, acquiring broad-based skills in the fields of electronics, welding, nuclear services, and allied health to name just a few opens doors to a vast variety of opportunities.
The Region 2000 Small Business Development Centre (SBDC) will also have a representative on hand to discuss opportunities in entrepreneurship. The SBDC assists aspiring business owners in starting new companies through financial and business planners as well as by providing low cost modern facilities collectively known as an incubator.
For further information, Brookneal residents can call the CVCC Altavista Center at 309-1225 or One Stop at 455-5940.
