CVCC to Host Reception for Local Artist Mona Williams

Lynchburg, Va. /Media Release/ -- CVCC will host a reception for local artist Mona Mullins Williams on Friday, August 4, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  The event will take place in Merritt Hall at the CVCC Campus in Lynchburg where 13 of Williams’ most recent renderings will be on display.

Williams’ CVCC exhibition will include pieces from her Pinned series, a two-dimensional part of a larger exhibition entitled Dirty Laundry.  The art is symbolic of “false friendships and lost friendships” as interpreted by the artist and is presented in mixed-media, monoprints and etchings.

“Making art is cathartic for me,” says Williams.  “Working in a visual medium allows me to communicate ideas and feelings that I would find difficult to express in words.”  She uses both traditional and non-traditional materials to help her further express the symbolism in her work.  “The pieces are not always pretty,” she adds, “but contain an element of irony and humor intended to help us laugh at ourselves.”

Williams received her Bachelor of Arts in Art Education as well as her teaching certification in 1985 at Tulane University in New Orleans.  Earlier this year she was awarded a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies, Sculptor and Drawing at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

Since 1990, Williams has been a major participant in the arts in central Virginia.  She has exhibited her work in a number of galleries and art shows, been an instructor at every level of education from college to preschool, and served as juror at several art shows.

She had been awarded a Study Grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and received the annual Sculptor Award in 1999 from a juried show at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center.  In 2005, Williams was decorated with the most prestigious “Best-in-Show” while competing in the Roanoke City Art Show.

Williams’ work will remain on display at the College throughout the month of August.  Friday’s reception is open to the public.  Admission is free.
