Photographer Jill Markwood to Exhibit at CVCC

Heavyweight Artist Shows a “Lighter Side” behind the Lens

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- What started out as an idea to photograph the festive hats worn at a Kentucky Derby party has turned into an art show as Jill S. Markwood displays her most recent work, “On the Lighter Side,” at Central Virginia Community College. The photo exhibition will be on display throughout the month of March in the Johnnie E. Merritt Building on the College’s main campus in Lynchburg.  The artist will attend an informal reception on Friday, March 2nd, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the exhibit site. The reception is open to the public free of charge.

Markwood, a serious photographer with 25 years of experience in the field of commercial and advertising imagery, knows how to have fun behind the camera as her latest work clearly indicates. At a 2006 Kentucky Derby party attended by friends of the artist under the theme “silly hats,” Markwood, with camera in hand, made the best of the occasion. Her photos capture the whimsical side of people that otherwise tend to project more stoic appearances. Markwood expanded her collection with additional photos of area artists and academics for this exclusive exhibit.

Already a highly respected portrait photographer, Markwood leaves nothing in the darkroom for this show. These high resolution photos, the ebony backdrop, and expert lighting expose all the fascination and flaws within each visage. Thus, the spectator is treated with a rare glimpse of the personalities and characteristics of subjects through their distinct laugh lines and slightly irrigated tear ducts. While Markwood “had fun” with the production process of “On the Lighter Side,” she has set a higher bar for all portrait photographers in and around Central Virginia.

Jill Markwood is a current board member of the Blue Ridge Photographic Arts Society (BRPAS). She is an Instructional Assistant for Communication Design at CVCC and teaches classes in digital photography and advanced lighting at the Academy of Fine Arts.

“On the Lighter Side” is part of the continuing art series produced by CVCC featuring established and up and coming artists. For further information about the exhibit, the upcoming reception, or future shows call (434) 832-7673.
