Author Michael D’Orso to Visit Lynchburg

Book signing at Barnes & Noble featuring latest non-fiction work, “Eagle Blue”

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- Three-time Pultizer Prize nominee Michael D’Orso will be in Lynchburg on Monday, October 15, appearing at Central Virginia Community College, Nationwide Insurance, and Barnes and Noble Booksellers. The author of fifteen books, including seven best sellers, D’Orso will lead an open forum in the Student Center at noon on diversity with CVCC students following morning classroom visits. He will be a guest lecturer at Nationwide Insurance that afternoon as part of their Diversity Series before finishing the day with a public appearance at Barnes and Noble for a book signing from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

D’Orso is best known for his narrative nonfiction covering a wide range of subjects including politics, professional football, racial conflict, environmental destruction, inner-city public education, and social justice. His past work has earned him numerous honors including the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, the Christopher Award, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, and the Lillian Smith Book Award. His most recent book, “Eagle Blue,” has garnered the Alex Award, presented by the American Library Association, and has been named “Best Sports Book of the Year” by Booklist Magazine and “Best Book of the Year” by BookSource, a national bookstore distributor.

“Eagle Blue” is a chronicle of the 2005 Fort Yukon Eagles, a high school basketball team from inside the Arctic Circle. D’Orso covers the journey of the team of native Alaskan boys as they march their way to the state championship game. However, “Blue Eagle” is much more than a sports book. D’Orso paints a portrait of a small village secluded from outside traffic, darkened by the arrival of the winter solstice, and mired in the social ills of alcoholism, domestic violence, and high dropout rates. It is a compelling narrative on a part of America that Publishers Weekly says, “deserves to be known.”

Copies of “Blue Eagle” will be available for purchase at book signings following each appearance including Barnes and Noble where visitors will have an opportunity to meet the author.

Michael D’Orso’s visit is sponsored by CVCC’s Diversity Committee and Cultural and International Events Committee and Nationwide Insurance. The noon forum at CVCC is open to the public.
