Latino Film Festival to be held at CVCC

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) is having a Latino Film Festival on October 23, 24 and 25.  The Latino Film Festival will feature films and short documentaries for creating an awareness of Hispanic issues and culture.  The showings are free and open to the public and are being jointly sponsored by CVCC, the recently formed Hispanic Alliance of Lynchburg, the CVCC Spanish Club, the CVCC Cultural and International Events Committee, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

The Latino Film Festival, the first of its kind at CVCC, will offer day and evening showings.  The first featured film, “El Norte” will start at noon for one hour and will run in three segments on October 23, 24 and 25 in Amherst Hall, room 2123.  This film is about Enrique and Rosa’s flight from Guatemala to the United States after the brutal assassination of their father and the disappearance of their mother.  It provides a personal perspective of their journey and of their life upon arrival in California.

The evening films will feature short documentaries regarding immigration, history, and cultural issues.  The first film, “Dying to Live” will be shown on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:00 pm in Merritt Hall, room 5145.  This film is a heart-wrenching look at one of the most pressing issues of this country and explores the aspirations of men, women and children who risk everything, including their lives, for a better life and opportunities in the US.

“The Life and Death of Frida Kahlo” will be featured on Wednesday, October 24 at 7:00 pm in Merritt Hall, room 5146.  This haunting 40 minute documentary opens with scenes from Kahlo’s funeral in 1959 and interviews people who knew and loved her.  Kahlo, who was frequently overshadowed by her husband Diego River, emerges as one of the most articulate, creative, and masterful of South America’s artists.

The final film, “Mayans: Apocalypse Then” will be shown on Thursday, October 25 at 7:00 pm in Merritt Hall, room 5146.  This 26 minute documentary examines the remnants of ancient Mayan cities such as Tikal, Copan, and Uxmal and attempts to determine what caused the collapse of one of the world’s greatest civilizations.

All of the films are in English, except El Norte which will be in Spanish with English subtitles.  “Dying to Live” will have subtitles in Spanish.  Discussion in Spanish and English will be held after each of the films and documentaries.  Light refreshments will be served.  More information on the Latino Film Festival can be obtained by calling 832-7662 or 309-1225.
