History Day Opens to Hundreds of Middle/High School Students

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- CVCC will host to hundreds of middle and high school students from nine school districts for National History Day this Saturday, February 23, 2008. The students will compete on one of two levels in any one of seven categories; presenting their historical interpretation of this year’s theme: Conflict and Compromise. First and second place winners will qualify for state competition in Williamsburg, Virginia, providing them an opportunity to go on to the national finals being held at the University of Maryland, College Park.

For the first time, this year’s entries will have already met preliminary qualifications since middle and high school instructors were limited to submitting three entries in each of the seven categories. According to Virginia District One Chair, R. Matthew Poteat, CVCC Assistant Professor of History, the overwhelming number of submissions for History Day in recent years has exceeded the College’s capacity to manage the event.

Students will gather from the school districts in Amherst, Bedford, Campbell, Appomattox, Buckingham, Prince Edward, Cumberland, Powhatan, and Lynchburg. They will compete in various categories including: Documentary, Exhibit, Historical Essay, Website, Performance, and Documentary.

The competition will begin at 8:00 a.m. Judges will select the top three entries and the results will be formally announced and ribbons awarded at noon in the CVCC Student Center in Amherst Hall. The third place winner will be designated as an alternate for the state competition in the event one of the top two representatives drops out.
