Mattox Exhibits Paintings on YUPO Paper at CVCCs Merritt Hall Gallery
Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- Magical Surfaces - Paintings on YUPO Paper by Kelly Gravely Mattox will be on exhibit at the Merritt Hall Gallery of Central Virginia Community College through the month of March. An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 14, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m.
The exhibition features the artists colorful and imaginative work in oils on a unique Japanese paper with very distinctive properties. YUPO paper is environmentally-friendly and has an exciting new surface that invites experimentation. Composed primarily of hydrogen and carbon, it does not give off toxic gases when burned and was created in order to fill the need for a durable, multipurpose, non-wood paper.
Mattox says, I use this paper to explore and as a tool to loosen up my painting techniques. It is a slick, smooth surface resistant to tearing. I can let my paints flow, and I can cut, scratch, lift, blot, and use mixed mediums. It is an artists paradise to be able to have fun with this paper and to be surprised by its magical surface.
People familiar with Kellys oils on canvas will enjoy seeing these experimental works and the many exciting effects produced by manipulating paint on this interesting paper. Kelly is an award-winning artist, well-known in the Lynchburg area and beyond, and is the owner, artist, and curator of Avenue Arts Studio Gallery at 1206 Rivermont Avenue.
The reception at Merritt Hall on Friday, March 14, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. is free and open to the public. Throughout the month, the gallery is open during regular college hours.
