Lana Velez Receives Outstanding Faculty Award

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- Central Virginia Community College announces that Lana Velez has received the Outstanding Faculty Award for 2008. The award recognizes a current faculty member each year for exceptional abilities and efforts as a member of the teaching community at CVCC.

Velez has been a full-time instructor of English at the college for the past six years and holds a  B.A. from Randolph Macon Woman’s College and an M.A. from James Madison University.

She is an effective and innovative teacher who understands the importance of classroom community and participation. In addition, her willingness to help her students extends beyond the classroom.  She actively seeks to encourage students to achieve personal growth and works with Polis, the CVCC literary and art magazine. She also serves on several college committees, including the Diversity Committee, where she is an asset to the administration.

Her desire to see at-risk students succeed led to her teaching a new fast-track English course, which helps students complete both developmental English and first semester college composition simultaneously. She has been instrumental in bringing nationally known writers to speak at CVCC and further inspire her students.

Active in the greater Lynchburg community, she uses her martial arts experiences at International Karate Academy to serve others.  She has volunteered at The Daily Bread and has organized and helped with self-defense workshops for battered women.  At the national level, she has co-presented at the SLOAN-C International Conference on Online Learning in Orlando, Florida.

CVCC is proud to recognize this vivacious and student-centered instructor who possesses a genuine love for teaching and has earned the admiration and respect of students and colleagues alike.

“I am honored to receive this award from my colleagues and students,” Velez said, “ I feel privileged to work with a wonderful group of people—faculty, staff, and students.  CVCC is indeed a community, and I am fortunate to have a job I love within this community.”
