Franklin University presents award to CVCC President Staat

CVCC Media Release 5/29/08 – A luncheon and formal presentation was held at Central Virginia Community College to honor CVCC president Darrel W. Staat with the Franklin University Community College Alliance Leadership Award. The award is given to the community college president who has exhibited leadership, dedication, and commitment to excellence in education.

A  former recipient of the award, Dr. Larry Dukes, past President-Emeritus of Southern State Community College in Ohio, presented the award to Dr. Staat and gave a brief history of Franklin University, founded in Ohio in 1902, and of the Community College Alliance organization. Currently, more than 245 community colleges in 32 states have teamed with the university to serve community college students pursuing bachelor's degrees. Sixteen undergraduate degree programs and the Vantage MBA are offered online.

Franklin University President David R. Decker, Ph.D. has heralded Dr. Staat as the “perfect choice” for this prestigious award. He cited Staat’s “desire to bring the College to the community by developing several off-campus centers” in his address. The statement was in reference to the establishment of the CVCC Center in Appomattox last June, and the opening of the CVCC Amherst Center to take place January 2009. Staat began his expansion program having previously built centers in Altavista (2001), in Brookneal (2002), and in Bedford (2005).

Dr. Staat thanked the CVCC board and the state board, and thanked all the hard-working members of the CVCC team for results of their recent efforts: legislative backing, $4.1 million dollars for library renovations, and $10.5 million in new revenues to build technology programs. He also mentioned  the future establishment of new programs in dental hygiene and culinary arts. He recognized the important alliance between CVCC and the surrounding community and how much the community college has meant to the people of Central Virginia.

In summary, he pointed out that all the efforts going on at CVCC now are ultimately to

the benefit of people “way down the road,” including those who haven’t been born yet, and underscored the truth of the College’s promise of being the place “where your future begins.”
