Beverly Jones Appointed to CVCC Advisory Board
Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/8/13/08 – Beverly Jones of Madison Heights has been appointed by the Amherst County Board of Supervisors to serve as a member of the Central Virginia Community College Local Advisory Board. She will fill an unexpired term until July 1, 2009. Members of the board are selected from the four counties in Region 2000 and from the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford.
Jones was an educator in the Amherst County school system for thirty-eight years and taught civics and economics at Monelison Middle School. She served on the Advisory Board for the Lynchburg College nursing program, the local board of the American Heart Association, and, most recently, on the Amherst Planning Commission. She is a trustee of Scott Zion Baptist Church in Madison Heights, in addition to serving as their financial secretary and actively participating in their many community programs.
After retiring from teaching, Jones continued her involvement with Monelison Middle School as a volunteer, mentoring students and emphasizing the importance of good reading and writing skills. She has always encouraged the students to play sports and enjoys keeping the clock at basketball games and helping with pep rallies. In her role as President of the Amherst County Retired Teachers Association, she keeps in touch with former faculty members, including a number of teachers from her own student days in Amherst County.
Born in Lynchburg, she has lived most of her life in Amherst County. She earned her B.A. from Virginia State University, and has taken post-graduate classes at Lynchburg College. She has always believed in strongly encouraging students, particularly during transitional periods in their lives when they may not fully understand where their educations can take them. She is looking forward to serving on the CVCC Advisory Board and using her educational background to further the mission of the college.
