Blue Boat, by Jill Markwood

Chair by the Dock, by Barbara Hartley
Barbara Hartley and Jill Markwood to Exhibit Work at CVCC Merritt Hall Gallery
Lynchburg, VA
/Media Release/10/6/08--“Close to Home,” an
exhibition of photographs by Barbara Hartley and Jill Markwood, will open at the
Merritt Hall Gallery of Central Virginia Community College on October 10 and
remain until the end of the month. An opening reception will be held on Friday,
October 10, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
The two artists have captured the character and beauty of the areas surrounding
their respective homes, and Hartley has included images from her extended
family’s homes, as well. Hartley’s photographs were taken near her house in the
Chesapeake Bay area, and during visits to family member’s homes in coastal
Virginia, Richmond, Monroe Louisiana, and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Markwood’s
photographs were taken around her home at Lynchburg’s Timber Lake and capture
the early morning mists and tranquil beauty of that waterside setting.
Hartley, a former Lynchburg resident for more than 32 years, spent many active
years in Central Virginia's art community both in the areas of Fine Art and
Communications Art. She has won awards and recognition in several media,
including photography, pastels, watercolors, oil painting, and writing. Her fine
arts work hangs in homes throughout the East Coast, and her advertising art has
received regional and a national awards and commendations.
As a Marine Colonel's daughter, Hartley was conditioned to welcome relocations
as exciting adventures. In 2007, she and husband, Cloyde W. Wiley III moved to
his childhood home of Urbanna, VA, where they have been joining two tiny fishing
cottages to create their dream home on the water’s edge. The exhibit includes
some images documenting the progress of this unusual construction. Hartley
explained, “I found it hard to limit the images for display. I can find equal
pleasure in the strong lines of a sun-strewn construction site as I do with the
incredible play of light and color created in nature. Some images were included
because they visually struck a chord in me; some just made me smile, for a
variety of reasons.”
Markwood is a professional photographer with over 25 years of experience in the
field of commercial and advertising photography. She has also exhibited her fine
arts work extensively over the years, including having a number of solo and
two-artist exhibitions at Merritt Hall, CJMW, and the Academy of Fine Arts. As
the photographer at Central Virginia Community College, she manages the
photography lab, assists students, and provides all the images for the school’s
literature and marketing materials. She is an Instructional Assistant for
Communication Design at CVCC and also teaches classes in digital photography and
advanced lighting at the Academy of Fine Arts. Markwood is a founding member of
the Blue Ridge Photographic Arts Society (BRPAS) and has been a board member in
charge of exhibitions for many years.
The reception at Merritt Hall on Friday, October 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
is free and open to the public. During the month, the gallery is open during
regular college hours. For further information contact CVCC curator Kathy
