CVCC to Co-host SkillsUSA Competition
Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/ -- Central Virginia Community College and Lynchburg City Schools will co-host the 2009 District III SkillsUSA Competition on Saturday, February 21, on the CVCC campus. One hundred and twenty-five students from nine high schools throughout the area will compete for district honors and the opportunity to advance to state and national competition levels. The event will take place between 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 Noon on the CVCC main campus.
Participating high schools include Appomattox, Amherst, Bassett, Bedford Science and Technology Center, E.C. Glass, Halifax, Heritage, Patrick, Pittsylvania County Career and Technical Center, and Staunton River. The activities will include competitions in a wide variety of skills, including everything from architectural drafting to extemporaneous speaking, food preparation, automotive service technology, current events, masonry, for a total of 56 competitive contests in areas relevant to superior work skills.
SkillsUSA is a national organization serving individuals who are preparing for technical, skilled, service, and health occupations. It is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry representatives, working together to help students excel and become valuable members of the 21st century workforce. There are more than 19,000 chapters throughout all 50 states and four U.S. territories. The chapters work to build and reinforce self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills, while providing educational experiences in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character development.
