Diane Shields Joins CVCC Amherst Center
Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/4/20/09 Diane Shields has joined the staff of Central Virginia Community Colleges new Amherst Center, recently opened at Mountainview Plaza in Amherst, Virginia. She is the Administrative Assistant to the Centers Director, David Vaughan.
Shields comes to CVCC from the Amherst County School Board, where she was an administrative assistant, working with the gifted program and Federal Title I program. Previously, she had been the secretary to the Principal of Amherst County High School.
A Virginia native, Shields was born in Clifton Forge, but grew up in Akron, Ohio. She lived for a number of years in Palm Bay, Florida, where she attended Brevard Community College, studying computer applications, and worked for the Palm Bay Police Department. In 1993, she and her husband, who is an HVAC technician for the Amherst public schools, came back to Virginia to be near extended family in the area. She and her husband also have a daughter, two sons, and three grandchildren.
In her free time, Shields does volunteer work with the Monacan Indians. She is their treasurer and has served on the council and worked in the Monacan Museum. She helps to organize the annual Monacan Powwow and is a fundraiser for the tribe. In an effort to help the Monacan Nation attain federal recognition, she has been involved in extensive historical research.
Shields had retired from the Amherst schools, but decided she wanted to come back to work and contribute to the communitys exciting new educational facility. The CVCC Amherst Center is such an important resource for the community, Shields says, We need these opportunities for our young people, and I feel this wonderful new Center is the beginning of greater growth in the Amherst area.
