CVCC Holds Common Book Program, CVVC Reads!

 

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/3/30/11 – Central Virginia Community College will hold it’s third common book program, CVCC Reads! with three events scheduled in April.  The program is co-sponsored by the college Diversity Relations Committee and the Cultural & International Events Committee.  As part of the program, four CVCC professors have assigned the book, The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien.

 

The Things They Carried is a powerful work of fiction, depicting the men of Alpha Company during the Vietnam War.  It has become a classic work of American literature, and a profound study of men at war.  It won France's prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize; it was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

 

CVCC Reads! book program will include the following events.  All events will be held at the CVCC main campus in Merritt Hall:

 

·         The film, Platoon, will be shown on April 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in Room 5146, sponsored by the Student Veterans Association. 

 

·         A discussion of the book, The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien, will be held on April 12, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Room 5124.  Humanities Professor Dr. David McGee and History Professor Matthew Poteat will lead the discussion.

 

·         Reflections and Discussion on the Vietnam War, led by Roger Wood, a Vietnam Veteran, will be held on April 21, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Room 5124.
