Sen. Steve Newman Named 2011 CVCC Outstanding Alumnus

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/4/27/11 Senator Stephen D. Newman has been named Central Virginia Community Colleges 2011 Outstanding Alumnus. He will be the keynote speaker at the May 12 graduation ceremony, held at the Vines Center.
Sen. Newman (R) serves in the Virginia State Senate of the Virginia General Assembly representing the people of the 23rd District. The District encompasses all of Bedford City and County, all of Lynchburg, and part of both Amherst and Campbell Counties. Sen. Newman has been a member of the Senate since 1996. Prior to this, he was a member of the House of Delegates (1991-1996) and of Lynchburg City Council (1988-1991).
Originally from Stuart, Virginia, Sen. Newman calls Lynchburg his home. Steve attended Lynchburg Christian Academy, Central Virginia Community College and Lynchburg College. He is employed as Vice President of Marketing and Sales and serves as a Board member of Delta Star, Inc., a manufacturer of medium power transformers and mobile substations.
Currently, Sen. Newman serves on several vital committees in the State Senate. These are Commerce and Labor, Education and Health, Transportation (ranking member), and Senate Rules Committee. He is also involved in the Central Virginia Planning Committee and Lynchburg Transportation Safety Commission, both non-legislative committees. Serving as Chair of the Senate Republican Caucus is also part of his political resume. Sen. Newman authored Governor McDonnells entire Education Package while he served on the Higher Education Reform Commission in the 2010 General Assembly.
Sen. Newman is responsible in part and, in some cases, total for many of the capital upgrades at CVCC, including construction of the Merritt Building, renovation of the CVCC Library, funding for the AREVA project, and securing approval for many of the programs and yearly budget items.
Education has been a priority for Sen. Newman since going to Richmond as a
legislator. Just in this current year, he has backed the Charter School Bill,
the Lab Schools Bill, and the Virtual Schools Bill. All of these are innovative
and technologically advanced programs aimed at improving the Virginia education
system.
Sen. Newman also supports the American Cancer Society and the Virginia Municipal League. Issues of faith and family are important to him, according to Sen. Newman. Steve enjoys spending time at home with his lovely wife Kim and their two sons, Tyler and Wesley. The family attends Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, VA.
