CVCC to Hold Open House for Welding Program
Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/05/02/11 -- Central Virginia Community College will hold an Open House on Thursday, May 5, beginning at 6:30 p.m. for prospective students interested in the Virginia Welding Program (VAWP). VAWP is a partnership between the College and Job Corps. The program was established to answer an ongoing need across the commonwealth for qualified individuals to fill welding jobs. Open house attendees will receive a program overview from representatives of CVCC and the Job Corps. A consortium of local employers will also share their perspective on future job potential.
CVCC Workforce Development promotes local talent for local jobs through a Grow Your Own Program. Through VAWP, the College offers a four-semester program leading to an Associate of Applied Science in Welding. The College recently acquired a robotic welding trainer that will enhance training and further prepare students for the job market. Significant funding was provided through a grant from The Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources, Inc.
The Welding Program pilot was launched in January 2011. Through this program, Job Corps recruits, screens, and selects the program participants and supports their efforts in accordance with Job Corps rules and standards. Participants must be age 18 to 24, have a high school diploma or GED, pass a background check, and meet test score minimums and scholarship requirements. Job Corps provides support including full tuition, fees, books, living allowances, medical care, a fund-matching childcare support program, and more.
The Open House will be held inside CVCCs Merritt Halls Multi-Purpose Room on the main campus in Lynchburg from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Persons interested in becoming a welding professional are encouraged to attend.
