Central Virginia Community College

National History Day at CVCC

Central Virginia Community College will host a seminar to introduce parents, teachers, and students to National History Day and answer questions about the program.

National History Day (NHD) is a highly regarded academic event for middle and secondary school students. Each year more than half a million students participate in the NHD contest. Students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topics’ significance in history, students present their work in original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries. Their work is entered into competitions in the spring at local, state and national levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. The program culminates in the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest each June held at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD.

NHD helps students develop the following attributes that are critical for future success:

   Critical thinking and problem-solving skills,

   Research and reading skills,

Oral and written communication and presentation skills,

   Self esteem and confidence, and

A sense of responsibility for and involvement in the democratic process.

The seminar will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 6 PM on the CVCC Main Campus, in Merritt Hall, room 5207. It is open to the public. Teachers, parents, and students (including home-schooled students and parents) are encouraged to attend.

The actual District 1 event is scheduled for March 24, 2012 and will be held on the main campus at CVCC.  For more information please visit http://www.history.org/history/teaching/vahisday.cfm
