Comprehensive Standards

Standards Specific to Undergraduate Programs

Comprehensive Standard #15: The institution identifies competencies within the general education core and provides evidence that graduates have attained those college-level competencies.

Offsite Committee Concern: Need evidence that graduates have obtained competence in general education. Closing the loop—need to demonstrate that college is closing the loop.

Focused Response: CVCC tests its graduates with the long form of the Educational Testing Service Academic Profile which measures average learning outcomes in three academic areas: Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and four skill area: College-Level Reading, College-Level Writing, Critical Thinking, Mathematics. Comparing average CVCC Academic Profile performance in these areas with average performance of students at a national sample of students at Associate Degree granting institutions, for each year between 1996 and 2003, CVCC Academic Profile academic and skill average learning outcome test scores have been equal to the average test scores of students in colleges offering associate programs thus providing evidence that graduate have attained competencies attained at other similar colleges.

In a 2000 study which compared the entering and exiting Academic Profile scores of same students in transfer curricula, there is evidence of value added by the CVCC curriculum. A 2000 study also provides evidence that students who are deficient in general education math and English skills are provided effective remedial education to bring these skills up to college level. Where indicated, changes have been made to course delivery. In 2001, besides the tests results of the Academic Profile, additional specific test results provide evidence of general education value added in English and computer skills. This indicates that improvements are taking place in general education core skills and academic knowledge while attending the college. Performance on Academic Profile and other tests by CVCC students and graduates indicates that there is no need for corrective action regarding general education.

Comprehensive Standard #16: The institution awards degrees only to those who have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction offered by that institution.

Offsite Committee Concern: 25 percent rule—have onsite committee examine graduates’ transcripts.

Focused Response: A random sample of graduate transcripts reveal that CVCC awards degrees only to those who have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction offered at the college. The policy is consistent with the requirements of the Virginia Community College System which states in

  • Section 5.2.2.0 that “To be eligible for graduation with an associate degree from a community college, students must: a. Have fulfilled all of the course and credit-hour requirements of the degree curriculum with at least 25% of credit semester hours acquired at the college awarding the degree;
  • Section 5.2.2.1 that “To be eligible for graduation with a diploma from a community college, students must a. Have fulfilled all of the course and credit-hour requirements of the diploma curriculum with at least 25 percent (25%) of credit semester hours acquired at the college awarding the diploma;
  • Section 5.2.2.2 that “To be eligible for graduation with a certificate from a community college, students must a. Have fulfilled all of the course and credit-hour requirements of the certificate curriculum with at least 25 percent (25%) of credit semester hours acquired at the college awarding the diploma.
