Letter from the President of CVCC
July 1, 2009
Greetings Everyone:
The CVCC Strategic Long Range Plan for FY ‘10 will further the college
mission to serve individuals, the business community, and economic
development in Region 2000. Working together the faculty, staff, and
administration of the college will continue to improve the college to
better serve all its constituents.
FY ‘10 ends the first decade of the 21st century during which we have
seen considerable change and improvement of the college. The college
constructed the AREVA Technology Center and the James River Maintenance
facility and renovated the Admissions/Records Office, the Accounting
Office, the IT Center, the Purchasing Office, the science labs, and the
Bedford Hall Library. Next, the college will construct a Culinary Arts
facility and Bookstore and renovate the Amherst Wing, current bookstore,
and the Amherst Lecture Hall.
During the decade, the faculty implemented a plethora of online courses,
two online degrees, and a number of considerable new certificate and
degree programs. The college developed four off-campus centers in
Altavista, Amherst, Appomattox, and Bedford serving over 750 students in
FY ‘09. The Workforce Development Division created a supportive working
relationship with the business community, including managing the
Workforce Investment Board’s Career Center, developing engineering
programs, and a great number of courses and certificates programs to meet
the needs of business and industry. In addition, it brought in over $5
million in grants to support the work of the division. The Advancement
Division raised another $6 million to support off-campus centers, the
AREVA Technology facility, scholarships, new programs, and the like.
Finally, the college increased its enrollment size in the VCCS from Level
2 to Level 3, which has positive, long-range budget implications for the
institution. The fall 2009 enrollment was the largest in the history of
the college with over 5,400 students. The first decade of 2000 was truly
a time of change and improvement at the college; we have moved a long way
down the path toward the goals set in the 20-year vision of the college.
As we know, the current recession has dealt the college a hard blow
financially; however, the faculty, staff, and administration have found
and made ways to keep the college on track with its mission, which is
even more critical than ever before. As we move ahead into this next
year, we will plan carefully to make sure that CVCC continues to serve
students, the business community, and economic development in Region 2000.
We look forward to another great year at Central Virginia Community College.
Sincerely,
Darrel W. Staat
