Old Dominion University @ CVCC
Site Guide
Advising
The Site Director
serves as student advisor for undergraduate distance learning students.
Students must meet with the Site Director to review their degree evaluation
prior to the beginning of each semester. Advising holds are removed at the end
of the meeting and students may register for their courses. Students will also
have a departmental advisor on main campus who will perform an official
evaluation for them. Graduate students are encouraged to contact their graduate
program director directly once they are fully admitted into their programs.
Students should call 434-386-4694 or email
smmartin@odu.edu to schedule an advising appointment.
Classroom
Conduct and Attendance
Distance students are
enrolled in courses in which
the instructor is not physically present. As a result, there may be a different
atmosphere from the more traditional classrooms. The environment, however,
should be one in which all students have an opportunity to listen, learn, and
participate. All Site students are
responsible for following the
ODU Classroom Conduct Policy.
Each student is requested to respect the learning needs of all other students.
This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining a quiet atmosphere in which to
learn. If students are disruptive, their classmates are encouraged to request
that they be allowed to hear the instruction and/or presentation taking place
within the course. If students continue to be disruptive, their classmates are
encouraged to request assistance from their site staff to manage and/or mediate
the situation. Disruptive behavior cannot and will not be tolerated. If students
observe any behavior in fellow students that disrupts their learning
environment, they should ask them to stop. Violators of the Code of
Student Conduct will be brought before the Student Council. For more information
on topics such as process and sanctions, please visit the
Honor Council web
site.
Under no circumstances are students to
bring children, visitors, or pets with them to class. It may not only be
distracting to other classmates but also puts the University at risk in the
event of injury or harm to the child, visitor, or pet and/or to other
classmates.
Satellite classes may have attendance policies. Students are expected to
attend every class unless it is absolutely necessary to miss. Professors may use
their own discretion as to whether they will require students to complete an
attendance sheet or if they will call roll. Attendance sheets, if required, may
be found in each satellite classroom. After the sheet has been circulated to all
course attendees, site staff will collect and forward completed attendance
sheets to the professor.
Computers
Site computers are to be used
only by ODU students for ODU classes. Students should bring their own disks or USB drives to
save documents. Students must follow the applicable
Lab and Software Usage Policies established by ODU Office of Computing and
Communication Services and the
CVCC Student Handbook. The computer lab may occasionally be closed for classes or for
special testing. Students should provide their own paper for printing.
Site Office
Site staff will scan, fax, or
copy any document related to official ODU functions or classes and students may
use Site phones; however, students are not allowed in the Site Office past the
reception desk area. Students may not retrieve their own videotapes or use
office computers. They should ask Site staff for assistance.
Cover
Sheets, Homework Folders, and Sending Assignments
All assignments, exams, and
attendance sheets are
sent each day by UPS to main campus. Cover sheets are available in each
classroom and office. A separate cover sheet must be completed for each
assignment or exam. The coversheet includes the student’s full name, UIN, name
of the course, instructor, date submitted, contact information, and student
signature. When graded assignments or exams are returned from main campus, each
is filed in the student’s homework folder located by the reception desk in the
main Site office and may be retrieved anytime the Site is open.
Campus
Parking
Students must obey all
parking signs on the CVCC campus and park only in designated student parking
areas. Student parking is NOT permitted in the lot adjacent to the AREVA
Technology building. Vehicles in violation of CVCC parking rules may be
ticketed or towed.
Technical
Problems
If students experience
technical problems for televised classes, they should notify office staff
immediately. They should not attempt to fix the problem or contact class
instructors. If the problem cannot be resolved within 15 minutes, DVDs will be
ordered. For Blackboard, email, or myODU problems, visit
Student Help for contact information. For videostream problems, go to the
Video Streaming Technical Assistance page.
Weather
Related Problems
If CVCC is closed due to
inclement weather, the ODU Site is closed. Students should listen to local TV
or radio stations or call the Site and listen to the voice mail message. If ODU
main campus is closed, Site staff will attempt to reach students by phone prior
to the start of classes. Students are encouraged to sign up for
ODU Alerts, an emergency system that
will notify students when ODU classes are cancelled.
Proctoring
Tests and Exams
Site staff will proctor all
in-class tests and exams. All tests/exams for televised or videostreamed
courses must be taken during the class time on the date assigned by the
instructor. If students must reschedule an exam, PRIOR arrangements must be
made to take a makeup exam. Students must obtain instructor permission by email
which is forwarded to Site staff. Due to limited classroom space, students must
set up an alternate test time by contacting Site staff.
Videotape
Checkout
If students miss a televised
class or need to review it, videotaped copies of classes are available for
checkout for up to two weeks following a class session. Tapes may be checked
out for 48 hours or viewed at the Site.
The videotape library does
not replace regular class attendance. Tapes are not intended for use by students
who plan to complete 1/3 or more of their courses by tape. Students may obtain
permission from course instructors to take classes solely by videotape, but must
pay an additional fee. See the
Videotaped Courses page for more information.
Graduation
Students have the option to
attend the CVCC commencement ceremony in May and be recognized as ODU graduates
and/or the
ODU commencement held in Norfolk on main campus.
